Tools for Facilitating Innovative Pedagogies + Unit Planning

This week’s class was short, which was nice after having longer classes due to the presentations.

We looked at this week how different tools can help facilitate the pedagogies we use in our classrooms. We were tasked with watching a video in our groups and answering some questions posted on a slide deck for our designated group.

This was the video:

These were the questions my group had to answer, and how we answered them:

  1. What are the innovative digital pedagogy issues addressed by this example?
  • The video is being recorded and showcased on YouTube – it reflects how students can showcase their voice and have an impact in the community.
  • The project occurred outside of traditional classroom time, showcasing that learning can happen outside the classroom and emphasizing community and experimental education.
  1. What innovative pedagogical approach(s) are being leveraged?
  • Constructivism- working in teams, participating and building knowledge.
  • Project-based learning- youth work together on tech-based projects
  • Zone of Proximal Development – Students are working with more experienced peers to build up their pre-existing knowledge to complete the task.
  • Project-based learning – The students are engaged in a project where they must learn, problem-solve and execute.
  • Experiential learning – Learning rooted in doing.
  • Service learning – The ramp affects the community.
  • Collaborative learning – The students are working together, figuring out roles, learning from each other and solving problems as a team.
  1. What digital tools could be leveraged to facilitate these pedagogical approaches?
  • YouTube videos
  • VR
  • Chatbots i.e. ChatGPT
  • 3D prints & printing
  • Moddy/Q Ramp (online custom ramp builders)
  • Ramp Builder and/or Ramp Tool

This was a short and fun activity that got us thinking about all the stuff we have learned so far and how it can be applied in our areas of work.

The other thing that was going on during this week, other than finishing up our final presentations, was the introduction to and starting to work on our unit plan assignment. For this assignment, we are tasked with creating a unit plan that incorporates digital pedagogies and tools into our course content.

For this assignment, I chose to do mine based on the Grade 10 English curriculum (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2007), as that is a course I will be teaching this coming fall and I figured it would be better to create something I know I can use in the near future than something that I might never use if I do not get to teach the course.

As I write this blog post, I have only generated the course for the unit and the topic, which is a media unit that focuses on the media section of the curriculum.

I am excited to get started and see what I can come up with as I work on the unit plan.

(Update):

I have finished the unit plan, and I have linked it below for you to be able to download. It is highly comprehensive and provides information that goes further than just the unit plan itself. If you do download it and use it, please make sure to give me credit for the unit idea.
